Strathmore Angling
Improvement Association

Fishing on the Rivers Isla and Dean

The Strathmore Angling Improvement Association has been in existence for over 50 years and is dedicated to providing some of the best and affordable fishing in the area. we have over 12 miles of fishings and that the waters are managed, stocked with over 5000 9-12 inch brown trout every season by the Association. We also undertake bank clearances and improvements on certain streches of the rivers to assist visiting anglers.

Permits and detailed river maps are available from all local tackle shops in Forfar, Dundee and Blairgowrie as well as the Spar in Meigle and the Post Office in Glamis at a cost of only £8 per day or £20 per season.

We are also dedicated to expanding the sport of fishing politically and otherwise, with particular attention being paid to the mangement of the waters and surrounding environment.

Our largest single commitment of the past thirty years has been the addition of a trout hatchery which in recent times has had significant improvements made, enabling us to increase our production and we now stock up to 20,000 fish annually.

The Rivers Isla and Dean are both excellent brown trout rivers with free rising trout to the dry throughout the system. A very healthy population of Grayling is also present in these waters.

Monikie Angling Club

Monikie Angling Club is about four miles north of Dundee. Head out of Dundee towards Arbroath on the A92 you will see the signpost for Monikie on the left hand side about three miles out.

There are 3 ponds, the North pond which is stocked with rainbows only, the Island pond which is stocked with rainbows and brown trout and Crombie which is stocked with brown trout only.

The Island Pond, which as the name suggests has 3 small islands and is also where you obtain a permit from the bailiffs Hut.

The North Pond does seem to fish better but there is little in the way of protection on a really windy day. It is also shared by Monikie Watersports so there are occassions when you will share the water with windsurfers and canoes

[The Island Pond]

The North Pond jetty is few minutes walk from the car park so if you do have
an electric motor and battery then a small trolley is advisable.

[The North Pond]

The North Pond fishes remarkably well and has few bad days. On more than one ocassion I've blanked on the Island pond to find that just about everyone coming of the North has had a full bag.

Crombie pond is situated in the Crombie Country Park, which is just a few miles further on from The Monikie Country Park. It's pretty well sign posted and bailiffs would be happy to give you directions. The picture below shows the water level when it was drained a couple of years ago. Normally the water would be close to the trees you can see on the right bank.

To fish here you still have to obtain a permit and safety jacket from the Angling Club at Monikie and then make your way to Crombie. You are given a key for the fishing hut and car park which you need to return at the end of the day together with your fishing returns.

The park has a variety of walks for visitors but also has a strict no dogs policy.

[Crombie Pond drained for repairs to the dam]

The fishing is fly fishing only and by boat, there is no bank fishing on any of the ponds.

Safety jackets are compulsory and must be worn at all times but they are supplied with the boat.

Electric motors are permitted on all of the ponds but are not available for hire.

The season is from the 29th of March until the 31st of October.

Boats may be booked up to 14 days in advance. (Only 2 anglers allowed per boat.)

It is open to members, guests and visitors and the prices for 2008 are  :

2 members £20 per boat per session.

Single angler boat has now been extended to cover the whole season at £10 per session.

Member and guest £22 per session.

Visitors £29 per session or £18 for a single angler boat.

The limit is twelve fish per boat on all three ponds.

Booking times are  10.00-10.30am   13.00-13.30pm   17.30-18.30pm

To book Telephone   :-   01382-370300

Anyone wishing to join Monikie Angling Club can obtain an application form either from the
Angling Club hut at Monikie Country Park or by writing to the secretary :-
Mr A Murray, 26 Mill Hill, Monifieth, Dundee.

For visitors to the area the ponds are situated in the middle of Monikie Country Park which offers
beautiful walks, picnic areas, watersports and numerous events throughout the summer season.
An ideal place for a family day out. There is also a cafe/restaurant in the park for refreshments.
