Strathmore Angling
Improvement Association

Fishing on the Rivers Isla and Dean

The Strathmore Angling Improvement Association has been in existence for over 50 years and is dedicated to providing some of the best and affordable fishing in the area. we have over 12 miles of fishings and that the waters are managed, stocked with over 5000 9-12 inch brown trout every season by the Association. We also undertake bank clearances and improvements on certain streches of the rivers to assist visiting anglers.

Permits and detailed river maps are available from all local tackle shops in Forfar, Dundee and Blairgowrie as well as the Spar in Meigle and the Post Office in Glamis at a cost of only £8 per day or £20 per season.

We are also dedicated to expanding the sport of fishing politically and otherwise, with particular attention being paid to the mangement of the waters and surrounding environment.

Our largest single commitment of the past thirty years has been the addition of a trout hatchery which in recent times has had significant improvements made, enabling us to increase our production and we now stock up to 20,000 fish annually.

The Rivers Isla and Dean are both excellent brown trout rivers with free rising trout to the dry throughout the system. A very healthy population of Grayling is also present in these waters.

Monikie Angling Club

Monikie Angling Club is about four miles north of Dundee. Head out of Dundee towards Arbroath on the A92 you will see the signpost for Monikie on the left hand side about three miles out. Follow the signs for Monikie and as you enter the village Monikie Country Park is the first entrance on the right.

Monikie Angling club provides what is probably one of the best value angling venues in Scotland with all of the ponds being stocked on a regular basis with full finned, quality, hard fighting rainbow and brown trout. The average size is about 1½ to 3lbs but there are a lot of over wintered fish which can reach into the double figures. All three ponds are very well maintained and are a pleasure to fish.

The Club provides fly fishing only by boat for stocked brown and rainbow trout. There is no bank fishing allowed on any of the ponds. Monikie Angling Club manages 3 fly fishing venues, the Island pond and the North pond are both in Monikie Country Park and Crombie pond is situated just 2 miles north of Monikie in Abercrombie Country Park. Crombie is stocked with brown trout only.

Permits for all of the ponds must be purchased from the bailiff's hut at the Island pond. The bailiff's hut also provides tea, coffee and microwave facilities. There are a total of 11 boats on the Island pond, 6 on the North pond and 4 on Crombie which are available to members and visitors. The boats are supplied with oars and anglers are welcome to use their own electric outboard motors. There are no electric motors availble to hire. The North Pond jetty is few minutes walk from the car park so if you do have an electric motor and battery then a small trolley may be advisable.

[The North Pond] [Monikie Angling Club - The Island Pond]

The Island Pond has 3 small islands one of which is now home to a family of Otters and Ospreys are regulary seen fishing here. This is also where you obtain a permit from the bailiffs Hut for all ponds.

The North Pond does seem to fish better but there is little in the way of protection on a really windy day. It is also shared by Monikie Watersports so there are occassions when you will share the water with canoes and windsurfers. This is not a major problem as they do tend to stay clear of any anglers.

Crombie pond is situated in the Crombie Country Park, which is just a few miles further on from The Monikie Country Park. It's pretty well sign posted and bailiffs would be happy to give you directions.

[Monikie Angling Club - The Island Pond]

The fishing prices for the 2011 season are as follows:

£21.00 per session for two OAP members (12 fish limit)
