Loch Leven

LOCH LEVEN FISHERIES – ANNOUNCEMENT

Faced with mounting losses totalling over £500,000 in the last five years, Loch Leven Fisheries is now in a position where it is forced to announce a significant reduction in its angling operation on Loch Leven from the end of the current season.

The Fishery’s hatchery and rearing ponds at Tarhill on the north shore of Loch Leven will be closed down and decommissioned at the end of the season. All of the Loch Leven brown trout, currently being reared there, will be released either directly into the loch or into its feeder streams depending on their stage of development. Loch Leven will revert to being a natural brown trout loch, with its trout population dependent on natural recruitment from the burns.

The number of clubs and individual anglers fishing Loch Leven has been declining steadily over the last decade but the rate of decline has undoubtedly accelerated over more recent years partly due to the well-publicised problems associated with the stocking of rainbow trout which was ceased in 2004. Loch Leven has found it difficult to compete on equal terms with the growing number of much smaller, better stocked, fisheries.

The Scottish Executive, on advice from SNH, have repeatedly turned down applications from the Fishery for a licence to shoot cormorants which have increasingly found freshwater fisheries such as Loch Leven easier pickings than their traditional feeding grounds in the North Sea and the damage they have been causing is considerable.

With the closure of the hatchery and rearing ponds, which are costing in excess of £80,000 per annum, Loch Leven will no longer be artificially stocked from the end of the current season and it is inevitable that this will result in a further significant reduction in the number of clubs and individual anglers wishing to fish on Loch Leven in 2007 and beyond.

Most of the current 30 strong fleet of boats operated by the fishery will no longer be required and will be disposed of next winter. However, it should be stressed that this is not the end of fishing on Loch Leven – a small number of boats will be retained for next season and beyond for those anglers still wishing to fish on the loch.

It is sadly ironic that this announcement comes at a time when the loch is fishing as well as it has for many a year. However, the economic reality is such that the loch has to be allowed to revert to being a natural brown trout fishery once more, as it was prior to 1983 when declining catches prompted the establishment of the hatchery and rearing ponds at Tarhill.

It is hoped that the natural recruitment from the burns will improve over the next few years leading to an improvement in the fishing and as a result to an increasing demand for boats. Additional boats would then be gradually added to the fleet.

Loch Leven Fisheries will endeavour with, it is hoped, the help of the other agencies involved to ensure the survival of Loch Leven and its renowned trout in the future.

Frandy Fishery

Frandy Fishery, Glendevon.

Frandy Fishery is situated in the picturesque Ochil hills on the Gleneagles Estate, Perthshire.
It is fly fishing only for rainbow, brown & blue trout and there is both bank and boat fishing.

The reservoir is well known for its scenic beauty and wide and varied bird life, including Osprey, Buzzard, Hen Harrier, Peregrine Falcon, Merlin and Red Kite. Part of the reservoir’s attraction is its feeling of remoteness although it is still very accessible, being just 45 minutes by road from both Edinburgh and Glasgow, and 20 minutes from both Stirling and Perth.

The season is March 1st till the 31st of October. The reservoir is stocked on a weekly basis throughout the season with high quality Rainbows, Browns, and Blues, all of which are triploids and complement the indigenous Brown trout population very well. The stocking policy is aimed at putting more fish in than there are fish coming out.

With a maximum depth of over 100 ft, shallowing off in many heather-clad bays to between 2 and 8 ft, the fishing is often very visual with an abundance of terrestrial insects

Frandy Fishery

The facilities include, ample car parking by the lochside, a fishing lodge with a range of tackle and flies for sale. There are 12 boats available for hire with outboard motors if required and life jackets are available by request. Fly fishing tuition is also available by very experienced tutors.

There is a wide range of tickets available from 2 hours to 8 hours including catch and release, concessions for OAP's and students and season tickets for both bank and boat fishing are available. A complete price list and sessions are shown on their own website, details below.

Airlie Estate is located in the Angus region of Scotland near the town of Kirriemuir.
Route B955 connects Cortachy Castle to Kirriemuir (5 miles).

From Dundee take the A90 northward for around 12 miles, then turn off at the A926
(signposted for Kirriemuir - 5 miles).

The estate consists of over 30,000 acres, largely in Glens Clova, Prosen and Moy.
The family home, Cortachy Castle, which dates back from the 16th century, lies at the heart of the Estate. Part of the uniqueness of this estate is the scope of sport which can be offered to clients from the dramatic panorama of the glens to the lower woodland surrounding the Castle running down to the ever changing River South Esk which is well renowned for its sea trout.

The Fishing

On one of the best known Sea Trout rivers in Scotland, the estate is fortunate enough to own a section of the South Esk and there are constant improvements being carried out under the watchful eye of Godfrey Darling our resident ghillie. Salmon fishing is also available. The fishing season runs from 16th February to 31st October.

Part of the conservation policy carried out by the estateis under the guidance of the Esk District Salmon Fishery Board Voluntary Catch and Release Guidelines. In order to conserve stocks of Salmon the estate undertakes that up to the end of April any salmon caught by anglers on the estate rivers are released.

Stalking

There is an abundance of Red Deer, stags, hinds and Roe Deer on the estate giving almost all year round access to stalking for discerning clients. The Red Stag stalking season at Cortachy runs from 16th September to 20th October. Hind Stalking runs from 21st October to 15th February.

[A view over the Glens]

Pheasant Shooting

The low ground shoot at Airlie provides some superb sport and usually consists of pheasant, duck and partridge. Carried out around the grounds of Cortachy Castle it benefits from steep sided valleys in an idyllic setting along the banks of the River South Esk. Bags of 200 to 250 per day are available and early days of predominantly partridge in Oct and early Nov can be arranged.

The backdrop of the Castle provides a magnificent setting for the gathering of the guns in the morning and lunch is available in the beautifully appointed Castle dining room. Our head keeper Mike Nisbet has been with the estate for some 20 years and will ensure the smooth running of the day. The Pheasant season runs from 1st October to 1st February.

Grouse Shooting

Grouse shooting in Scotland is constantly open to fluctuation. However when available it is arguably one of the finest sports. Enquiries are welcome for grouse shooting, although at present along with other Scottish Estates we are doing all we can to preserve grouse stocks working in hand with the Game Conservancy. The grouse season runs from 12th August to 10th December.

Rough Shooting

Rough shooting can be offered either on the low ground or on the hill beats of Glen Clova
or on Glen Moy with driven hare and walked up rabbit shooting on offer as well.
