Loch Leven |
LOCH LEVEN FISHERIESLoch Leven's world-renowned brown trout, which once supported Scotland's top trout fishery, are making a comeback after more than 40 years. Scottish Natural Heritage said its officers had found an increase in spawning levels in rivers running into the Kinross loch.
It said fishermen were now returning to the loch and that trout measuring up to 50cm had been caught. The decline in the 1970s was blamed on high pollution levels. The trout in the loch had declined so much it was artificially stocked with brown trout, and later with rainbow trout, to keep a viable fishery going. Now pollution levels have dropped dramatically, trout stocking has ceased and a natural fishery has been restored.
Neil Mitchell, Loch Leven nature reserve manager, said: "These results are very encouraging, as it is our aim to work with the estate to sustain a healthy wild population of brown trout as an important element of the overall ecology of the loch."

Airlie Estate is located in the Angus region of Scotland near the town of Kirriemuir.
The estate consists of over 30,000 acres, largely in Glens Clova, Prosen and Moy.
|
The FishingOn one of the best known Sea Trout rivers in Scotland, the estate is fortunate enough to own a section of the South Esk and there are constant improvements being carried out under the watchful eye of Godfrey Darling our resident ghillie. Salmon fishing is also available. The fishing season runs from 16th February to 31st October. Stalking
There is an abundance of Red Deer, stags, hinds and Roe Deer on the estate giving almost all year round access to stalking for discerning clients. The Red Stag stalking season at Cortachy runs from 16th September to 20th October. Hind Stalking runs from 21st October to 15th February.
Pheasant ShootingThe low ground shoot at Airlie provides some superb sport and usually consists of pheasant, duck and partridge. Carried out around the grounds of Cortachy Castle it benefits from steep sided valleys in an idyllic setting along the banks of the River South Esk. Bags of 200 to 250 per day are available and early days of predominantly partridge in Oct and early Nov can be arranged.
Grouse ShootingGrouse shooting in Scotland is constantly open to fluctuation. However when available it is arguably one of the finest sports. Enquiries are welcome for grouse shooting, although at present along with other Scottish Estates we are doing all we can to preserve grouse stocks working in hand with the Game Conservancy. The grouse season runs from 12th August to 10th December. Rough Shooting
Rough shooting can be offered either on the low ground or on the hill beats of Glen Clova
